Our first event of the year took place on the south coast. Travelling down to Southampton, TMW and Brandpie joined us for our third year at Solent. 

Kicking the day off, Donald Fogarty breezed through an introduction to the creative industries. Sharing how the areas of the advertising, branding, design, marketing and media are made up. Giving the students ideas about which area might suit them best Donald led onto some key tips across selecting companies to apply to, interviews and how to compose yourself when looking for jobs.

“Research lots and focus on ten companies that are right for you. Don’t apply to the whole industry.”

Sunaina Sharma then got up to talk about branding and her career choice to join Brandpie after studying economics at university. It just goes to show that the creative industries are not just for those who are studying creative courses but are open to people from all walks of life.

“Be open to opportunities in industries or jobs that you would never pitch yourself in.”

For the half time brief we challenged the students to pitch their best social campaign idea for the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film. With 10 teams vying for glory, the winning idea surrounded celebrities reporting that red marks had been found on the arms, these red marks over time would reveal the films logo, a mash-up of the Superman and Batman logos.

After the break Adam Oldfield shared his route into the industry via advertising and mobile. He explained how to prototype for mobile apps, taking students from conception to research to rapid prototyping.

Finishing the day off in style we had a creative director duo from TMW, in the shape of Tom Harman and George Bell. Running through several tips for the students, there were two key take aways from the CD’s;  Everything you do should be seen as an experience for better or worse and always be entrepreneurial.

“Everything you do should be an experience throughout.”
