David Tudor-Hall, Assistant Website Manager at Marks & Spencer
My name is David Tudor-Hall, I studied advertising at Southampton Solent University and I am now an Assistant Website Manager for Marks & Spencer. I work within the Lingerie team, trading the website, maintaining site standards and ensuring our proposition is in line with store activity so that customers are provided with a multichannel retail experience.
What was your first ever job?
Stock Room Porter at Index when I was 16.
How did your career in advertising begin?
It hasn’t really started yet, my job is in ecommerce.
How did you get your first job?
My sister already worked in M&S Head Office, they have an internal vacancies board where she found the role and applied me through the ‘refer a friend’ scheme. I was offered an interview and subsequently offered the job 2 weeks later.
What’s your biggest achievement?
I built a TV stand out of an old, broken Ikea wardrobe. It has a built in mini-Fridge and racks to store DVDs. I never expected it to come out as good as it did, and I’m reminded of my workmanship every day thanks to the use I get out of it.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I get to stare at lingerie all day and I get to communicate with a lot of other people across the business to achieve a lot of different tasks. It’s a varied role which keeps me on my toes.
What’s the worst thing about your job?
Working in what’s considered a relatively new area of an old and traditional business, I constantly receive requests for both information and to make changes to the website with unrealistic timescales. Managing expectations and ambiguity is a constant challenge and sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done.
If you could work with any brand what would it be and why?
ASOS. Similar to what I’m already doing, but a purely ecommerce led business aimed a target market I’m more familiar with.
Name three things that inspire you.
My phone, doing so many things at once and genuinely making my life easier. Hip Hop and The American Dream.
If you could share a desk with anyone, who would it be?
What’s your one piece of advice for students looking to get into advertising?
Advertising is a massively competitive area to get into. Don’t be disheartened if you’re first job isn’t in advertising. See it as a way of getting real world experience, and if you join a larger organisation, look for opportunities to move around or get short term placements in advertising related departments. It’ll give you a great chance to network and get noticed whilst you’re earning money!
