Elliot Bates and Will Moir, AKA Bates 'N' Moir, are 3rd year Creative Advertising students at Falmouth university looking to pursue a career in the world of advertising. Currently out gaining experience at both local and London based agencies, hoping to have a foot in the door when it comes to finding a job next year. 

Tell us about why you chose to study advertising

Will: My family comes from an advertising background. Both my grandmother and grandfather worked in the industry and my uncle has set up his own agency in Norfolk. For as long as I can remember it is what I wanted to do, I love the concept of showcasing ideas and ultimately influencing peoples choices – for the best of course. 

From looking at the course provided by Falmouth I knew I had to get on it. They offer a great starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in advertising. From my two years there I have been able to build a portfolio with the guidance of some great lecturers. It has given me the necessary tools and guidance I needed to find the path I wanted to go down. It introduced me to my now creative partner Elliot Bates who I have now been successfully working with for the past few months.

Elliot: My route to studying advertising is a little different to Will’s. I was originally going to do a business based course, but decided that I wanted to pursue something that would allow me to be more creative and ultimately interest me more. I love how there is no correct answer in advertising, it’s all how you interpret something and what your ideas are. I took a year out after attaining my A levels as I was not fully sure if I wanted to go to university. I decided to go and it’s been one of the best decisions I have ever made. 

I decided on Falmouth as it had a great reputation within the arts and it was in an area which suited me, a small seaside town similar to where I am from, the small island of Guernsey. The Creative Advertising course at Falmouth is really good, we have excellent lecturers who all have many years of experience in advertising and marketing. We have just relocated to the other Falmouth campus and now have even better facilities, the course just keeps improving and growing.

Why do you believe the choice to study advertising is becoming more popular?

Will: In my opinion its because of all the great adverts out there at the moment. They are the inspiration for the younger generation and by seeing them it encourages them to try and get into the industry. Its such a key part in all our lives – in fact my grandfather told me when I was deciding on my course that it is the one industry that will never disappear, for as long as we know and as far as we can see, we have been selling and people have been buying. Advertising is the key to the transaction. It’s such an exciting industry, constantly changing, constantly adapting. You never know what to expect. 

Elliot: It’s a really exciting industry, there is such an attraction to working in an industry that is always developing, new brands, new techniques, new ideas. As a course advertising gives you a widespread knowledge in not just advertising, but marketing and PR too. 

Why did you decide to form a creative team together? 

Will: Complete chance. Having worked with a few people on my course I was thinking I would never find someone who I really worked well with. Then one time we decided to do a small project together and it just turned out really well. From then its been the go to plan. 

Elliot: Honestly it was just trial and error. I worked with a few people and we found it difficult to sit down and work. I was living with Will so just gave it a go on one of our briefs early second term and it’s worked out well. We kind of fit in well to each side of the business, art direction and copywriting. 

What are the benefits of teaming up?

Will: The benefits are endless, someone to confer with, someone to tell you if your idea is not going anywhere and also someone to talk to whilst doing work. Its also great because if you do feel an idea is going nowhere you may find that all it needed was a little something from someone else in order to make it a great idea.

Elliot: The main one I would say is having someone to bounce ideas off, it’s really hard to come up with ideas on your own that are of a good quality. You need to be comfortable enough with your creative partner to tell them point blank when an idea is rubbish, me and Will were already friends before we started working together so we were cool with just being honest about each others ideas. 

Would you recommend teaming up?

Will: 100%. If nothing else, you have someone to talk through your ideas with. Agencies tend to prefer teams as well so finding someone who you can work with early is a big, big help. 

Elliot: Without a doubt. There are many benefits to it and agencies tend to hire teams so it makes finding a job easier. 

What experience have you had and what has it taught you?

Elliot: I have done a five week placement with Specsavers creative department in the summer of 2013, doing design and concept work. It was a great experience and it was what really pushed me into wanting to work as part of a creative team. It taught me to not hang onto ideas, that only a few ideas will actually be any good and the rest can be thrown away. Unfortunately me and Will have not done a joint placement together, but we are looking for some. Please check out our website if you'd like to take us on.

What agency would you like to work for and why?

Will: JWT has always been an appealing choice. Everything they do has its own unique style. We had a workshop with two of the creative team, just seeing them work and working with them on briefs made me realise how devoted they are to gaining the best out of every brief.

Elliot: As Will said JWT is an agency we both find really interesting. They have great clients, and do a lot of work in social media ideas which really interests me. I am also interested in companies like AMV BBDO, such a large agency that has done so much great work over the years, it’s a very prestigious agency. 

What's your dream role?

Will: Directing, ideally as a creative director in an agency where I would get a variety of clients and briefs. Something that surprises me everyday and pushes me to think outside the box. Having teamed up with Elliot I have found myself much more in the art direction side as opposed to Elliot who focuses on the copy (surprising for a dyslexic.) 

Elliot: Working as a copywriter or art director in a creative team. I enjoy both aspects, between me and Will I tend to do more copywriting, but also help out with the designing and art direction. Both sides of it really interest me and it’s fun to change between the two roles. Right now a dream role would be to work for someone like JWT, in a team with William. 

Who would you most like to share a desk with?

Will: Olly Murs, don’t know why I just love that guy. 

Elliot: Someone funny, like Rod Gilbert. I can just imagine him losing it everyday ranting at his computer, but I probably wouldn’t get any work done through all the laughter.

What's been your most memorable moment so far?

Will: That would have to be the first feedback session we had after joining as a partnership. Having the praise from the lecturer made us realise we had found a good team.

Elliot: I’d say that would be me and Will nailing a solid 1st for our portfolio! I’d tried working with a few other people, and we always struggled getting down to actually doing the work, whereas with me and Will we find it easy to get it done. We have a good balance of when to chill out and when to get cracking with the brief. 

What do you get up to in your spare time?

Will: I am currently in and out of jobs in my local village helping out with bar work, admissions and even some manual labour. This is in order to afford to live at uni as fees are a bit hefty! I’m your average student I enjoy the pub, surfing and hanging out with friends. I’m not going to lie and say I spend every waking hour thinking about advertising because that would be ridiculous; everyone needs some time to get inspired. 

Elliot: In between uni I go home and work, I work for Specsavers as a temp normally to get some money together. That money normally goes towards uni or surf trips! I surf whenever I can, I love to travel to new places to surf. I recently got back from a month in Bali which was incredible. I’ve been to Costa Rica too as well as most of Europe too. The waves at home are not so good so it’s great to travel and see new places and waves. I race motocross at home in Guernsey too, as well as France. I also try and stay in shape by going to the gym in a few times a week and also enjoy going out.

Elliot Bates as described by Will Moir: No matter what situation he is in, he is unable to portray any sort of facial expression. He's totally blank, all of the time. His face looks this '_' Anyway, Elliot asked me for some help on one of his projects. I realised this poor lad from Guernsey just didn't understand modern times. He had been sheltered from the modern world. To this day, Elliot is still terrified with the concept of electricity, cars and even sliced bread. Treating him as my good deed of the day, I decided to take him under my wing and teach him everything I know about being the perfect modern man. I'm yet to find a way to break the news to him that I am only doing this out of pity and not genuine respect. 

Will Moir as described by Elliot Bates: I first had the displeasure of meeting Will Moir (Moir is pronounced Mwaaaah) in my first week of university during a freshers event. I was sat at the bar with most of my course mates, when all of a sudden, this strange, odd looking kid approached us. Safe to say what followed was him boring us with stories of Gloucestershire. His mother, noticing my obvious leadership qualities and strong personality, asked me to protect him. Since the start of this creative partnership, Will has made excellent progress. He now buys his own trousers, and no longer needs to sit on an extra cushion when getting his hair cut. Growing in confidence, and extending his bedtime to 10:30 on some weekends, Will has started to show enough potential, that with enough time, and my guidance, he could be something special.
